Sundays. Usually full of sleep ins, cuddles, a late and large breakfast (weekends are the only time I like to eat eggs). This past Sunday however, I roused 5 of my friends and boyfriend to climb Mt Warning in the northern NSW region.
I would recommend that you start this hill early. It took us around 3 hours and 45 mins in total, for an 8.5km round trip. We woke at 6am, drove 2 hours (Ok, 2.5. I got us lost), and began the climb at 9:15am. If you leave it too late, you run the risk of dusk falling before you get to the bottom.
What a beautiful experience, especially in the autumn months. It was even raining slightly, making us feel even closer to nature. Seizing the day in such a way always clears my mind – no phone reception, just the sound of the birds, your feet and the sun chatter of hikers around you. Oh, and a little panting.
The trip on the way to the base is beautiful – the town of Murwillimbah produces sugar cane – so there is plenty to see on the way. Not to mention all of the cows casually grazing. Super cute. On the way down, there is a small restaurant which we didn’t stop at. We had our sights set on Raw Energy at Cooloongatta which didn’t shut until 3pm. Perfect. I was so hungry for my pesto, roast veg, chicken and avo on rye that I didn’t take a picture of it.
– take some snacks. I have included the recipe for the oatmeal cookies we had below
– leave early!
– have a central meeting point with your friends. You won’t have any reception once you hit Mt Warning Road.
– make sure you have a base level of fitness if you don’t want to take all day. You could try a smaller hike beforehand
– have good shoes (runners are ok) and plenty of water
– take a good group with you. It’s fun.

Hiking cookies recipe
1 cup self raising flour
1 cup oats
0.5 cup sultanas (or dates)
0.5 cup walnuts
1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
1. Mix dry ingredients
2. Mix wet ingredients
3. Mix dry and wet ingredients together until combined
4. Bake at 160 degrees celsius for 15 mins. You can make these as big or little as you like. 2 tbsp of mixture was the perfect size for us hikers!
